A person found the deer on Oct. 31 in the southern end of the Cache Valley along McMurdie Hollow Road, also known as the Pigsah Road, according to DWR investigator Kip King. The person called DWR officials and King responded to the area.

The deer had been completely “skinned and cleaned out,” King said. “The head had been removed and a very little, minor portion of the meat had been harvested.”

King said officials were not calling the incident a poaching case because they believe it occurred at the end of the general deer hunting season.

“I’m assuming it was probably harvested legally,” King said. “The only thing they did was allow the meat to go to waste.”

Allowing deer meat to waste in a public area is a class B misdemeanor, the equivalent of a speeding ticket, King said.

“If somebody harvests wildlife legally, they are required to use the meat in a manner that’s consistent with normal use,” King said.

King said DWR conservation officers throughout the state have several “waste” cases each year.

Anyone with information about the skinned deer can contact King at 435-363-6494 or call the UTip Hotline at 1-800-662-3337. Tipsters can remain anonymous and rewards are available for individuals who provide information that leads to successful apprehension and conviction.
