SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested for outstanding warrants and possession of drug paraphernalia after he jaywalked in front of a police car Thursday, police said.

Tyson Bate, 25, got out of a car he was a passenger in along the road near 1800 S. State Street and immediately turned and started to walk across State Street against the light, according to Salt Lake police detective Dennis McGowan.

“As he did so, an officer was driving in his marked police car north on State Street and almost hit the guy because he either ran or walked right in front of him,” he said.

Bate was initially compliant when the officer made contact with him, but then fled east of State Street while the officer looked up his information, according to McGowan. He said additional officers converged on the area and located Bate a few blocks away.

Investigators said they discovered Bate had outstanding warrants for his arrest when he was caught. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia, jaywalking and fleeing from an officer in addition to the warrants and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.

Bate had an outstanding felony warrant for possession of a controlled substance in addition to misdemeanor warrants for theft, disorderly conduct, possession of drug paraphernalia, manufacture or cultivation of drug paraphernalia, and retail theft, according to the probable cause statement.
