WEST VALLEY CITY — A 16-year-old boy is recovering after being rescued from beneath an SUV that veered off the road and hit him Thursday.

The driver of the GMC Yukon, a 26-year-old West Valley woman, said some hot soup in the car spilled and burned her leg as she turned right onto 3200 West, causing her to swerve, West Valley Police Lt. Matt Elsen said.

The West Valley teen was riding his bicycle down the sidewalk at 2822 S. 3200 West about 6 p.m. when the car swerved toward him. The Yukon crossed the sidewalk and crashed through a fence, dragging the boy under the vehicle and coming to rest on top of him, Elsen said.

Police and firefighters brought blocks to secure the SUV and used an airbag to lift the car off the teen so they could pull him out. He was transported to an area hospital in serious condition with possible broken bones and internal injuries.

"The 16-year-old just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, riding his bike on the sidewalk," Elsen said. "The fire department had guys under the car there, talking to the kid. He was conscious and alert the whole time. He knew what was going on."

Police are investigating the accident, considering whether possible citations will be issued for distracted driving or other driving infractions.
