SALT LAKE CITY — A man caused a stir on the University of Utah campus Wednesday after he drove over a pedestrian bridge and got his car stuck on a flight of stairs, police said.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on the Legacy Bridge that crosses over Mario Capecchi Drive, according to University of Utah police Sgt. Garth Smith. A 76-year-old was attempting to drive to a lecture at the Commander’s House at 1965 De Trobriand St. when he apparently became confused and drove onto the pedestrian bridge, Smith said.
“We aren’t sure where he entered onto the sidewalk itself, but it’s in that same area,” Smith said.
The man drove his Audi Q5 across the Legacy Bridge and down two flights of stairs, then reversed up one flight of the stairs and became stuck while trying to retrace his path, Smith said. Several pedestrians were in the area at the time, but no one was injured in the incident.
“There was cosmetic damage and some dents throughout the car from his maneuvering, but the tow truck company was able to move the car in a direction and reverse it back up the way it came,” Smith said.
Smith said it was the first time anyone had driven onto this pedestrian bridge and staircase, but a Honda drove into the central campus area and got stuck on stairs a few years prior.
