ST. GEORGE — The driver of a Corvette who died after launching his vehicle into the air while traveling at a high rate of speed, crashing into a guard rail, has been identified.
Colin D. Wiest, 32, of St. George, was traveling west on state Route 7 near River Road just after 4 p.m. on Saturday. Though investigators were still trying to confirm Sunday his exact speed, one estimate was Wiest was going at least 100 mph, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
The Corvette crossed the threshold of River Road and went airborne, according to a statement from the UHP. The car's front end collided with a guard rail where it became lodged and slid about 200 feet.
Dustin L. Cummings, 27, of Washington, Utah, the passenger in the vehicle, was injured and taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center. His condition was unknown Sunday, according to the UHP.
Both Wiest and Cummings were reportedly wearing seatbelts.
