OGDEN — Weber State football is starting to resemble a Harlequin romance novel.

Week after week, the Wildcats have an opportunity to win their first game of the season in the fourth quarter. Yet they consistently find ways to lose the game late on a mistake of some kind.

This week’s 30-17 loss to Portland State was no different, and it featured the usual mix of good, bad and ugly moments for the Wildcats.

The Good: Resilience --------------------

This game was far from Weber’s best game of the season, with mistakes piling up like Box Elder bugs. However, the Wildcats had a valid chance to tie or take the lead late, showing the team has the ability to overcome mistakes to have a chance. Credit has to be given to Weber for continuing to have a chance at victory in the fourth quarter.

The Bad:

It appeared Weber State had found a dominant running attack just a few weeks ago against Cal Poly. Now, it looks like the Wildcats’ effectiveness running the football is equivalent to a popgun’s effectiveness in big-game hunting. Weber managed only 75 yards of offense, compared to Portland State’s 303 rushing yard. Because of this, and the turnovers, the defense spent 40-plus minutes on the field.

The Ugly: Turnovers

Turnovers not laced with apple, peach or cherry never taste good.
