UTAH STATE PRISON — An inmate died when he jumped from a sink and toilet fixture in his cell Saturday morning, Utah Department of Corrections officials say.

Officers saw Ryan P. Allison, 22, banging his head on the concrete floor around 7:30 a.m. and were preparing to enter the cell when Allison dove head first from the fixture, according to a press release. Officers entered the cell and gave Allison CPR but were unable to revive him.

Allison was alone in a camera-equipped cell in the Olympus facility, which houses inmates who are mentally ill.

The Unified Police Department is reviewing the incident. Allison’s body was turned over to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

Allison pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges of threat or use of a dangerous weapon in a fight, a class A misdemeanor, and making threats against a judge, a third-degree felony in September 2010. Allison was initially sentenced to the Utah State Hospital for treatment but officials said “due to his disruptive behavior there,” he was ordered to serve his sentence at the prison. He was incarcerated at the Utah State Prison in April 2011.

In August, Allison was charged with and found guilty of assault by a prisoner, a third-degree felony. Allison had a discharge date of May 24, 2015.

Allison's is the second death by alleged suicide at the state prison in the last six days.
