BOISE, Idaho — The BYU Cougars headed north to take on the Boise State Broncos on the smurf turf Friday.

BYU was hoping to avoid a fourth straight loss, but it wasn’t meant to be. The Broncos rolled and scored at will, routing the Cougars, 55-30. The loss now puts BYU’s record at 4-4 after starting 4-0.

There are some injuries, most notably star QB Taysom Hill, but the Cougars have lost the luxury of using that as an excuse.

BYU defense getting progressively worse with every week...youth, injury and inexperience explanations can't explain the regression — Brandon Gurney (@BrandonCGurney) October 25, 2014

The Cougar defense gave up over 40 points and more than 400 yards in the first half and the offense couldn’t get a first down until the second quarter. The game was hard to watch at times and Twitter started to turn on the coaching staff.

@kslshep@kslcleon I want some action. Embarrassment. 641 yards. Tell me again about Nick Howell doing a good job. 97 pts in 2 games. — Brian Maxwell (@TheBMax) October 25, 2014

The Cougars had a few bright spots, mainly punter Scott Arellano and running back Jamaal Williams finally came back and ran his heart out.

After four losses in a row against mediocre teams fans want to see a change in morale and intensity.

The Cougars take on the 5-3 Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on the road. What was thought to be a blowout win for BYU a few weeks ago is now being viewed as a solid match-up.

The Cougars and Blue Raiders will kickoff at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 1 on CBS Sports Network.
