BEAVER COUNTY — A man was arrested after he confessed to poaching a buck deer a day before the general rifle season deer hunt, Division of Wildlife officials said.

The poaching was reported to DWR officials on Oct. 17, the day before the general rifle hunt. A citizen saw a pickup truck and heard a single gunshot in a rural area near Sulpherdale, according to a DWR news release. The citizen saw a man and woman marking a spot in the road before they drove away in a pickup truck.

The witness drove to the area, located the mark in the road and found a dead 2x2 buck deer nearby. The deer looked like it had been recently killed with a rifle, DWR officials said. The witness contacted DWR conservation officers and they began an investigation.

The conservation officers monitored the area on Oct. 18 and saw the pickup truck return. A man exited the truck and began walking along the hillside looking for the animal, but was unable to locate it, DWR officials said. He then left the area and headed south on I-15.

Officers did a traffic stop and interviewed the man in the pickup truck. The man told police he had a deer permit for a different unit and he eventually confessed to killing the buck deer and leaving it to waste, DWR officials said.

Ray Lack was arrested and booked into the Beaver County Jail on suspicion of wanton destruction of protected wildlife.
