UKRAINE — A two-story temple, complete with platforms that archaeologists believe were used as altars, was recently discovered in Ukraine.
The temple was uncovered by archaeologists near a large prehistoric settlement and was made of wood and clay, according to Live Science. They found five rooms with red walls on the upper floor and evidence of a galleried courtyard.
Burnt lamb bones were found on a platform located on the upper floor, while additional animal bones and pottery fragments were found in the courtyard, according to researchers. Numerous figurines that resembled humans were also located in the temple.
The temple was near an ancient settlement called Nebelivka, which had more than 1,200 buildings, according to Tech Times. They reported that the settlement’s site is almost twice the size of the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The findings were presented at the European Association of Archaeologists’ annual meeting.
