WEST VALLEY CITY — Four people have been arrested in connection with the shooting of a 72-year-old man who was hit in his doorway on Sept. 27.

Robert Warren had just returned home in the 3900 block of Meadowgate Drive about 10:40 p.m. that night after spending an evening at the symphony with his wife, when he answered a knock at the door and was shot multiple times on his doorstep.

He was in critical condition for more than a week and remained hospitalized Thursday, but he is no longer in the intensive care unit, according to police.

The crime shocked the family and the neighborhood because of how seemingly random it appeared.

On Thursday, West Valley police announced they arrested Raymond Marquina, 20, Michael Robert Flores, 38, and Leann Martinez Velasquez, 32, for investigation of attempted murder. Flores was also booked for investigation of multiple counts of discharge of a firearm. Velasquez was arrested for investigation of an additional count of obstruction of justice.

A key piece of evidence was a knit cap recovered at the shooting scene. DNA extracted from that cap was run through a national database, which came up with a match on Flores, according to police.

A fourth suspect in the case, Ricardo Smith, 36, was arrested for investigation of aggravated robbery, felony weapon possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police have not yet talked about any relationship between the suspects and Warren or how the two parties may have been acquainted. Warren reportedly owns several rental properties, according to neighbors.

In addition to DNA evidence, police say they received confidential tips from people who named at least one of the suspects.

Additional details are expected to be released during an afternoon press conference.
