SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently released a video about the purpose of temple robes and garments, dispelling the myth that temple garments are "magic underwear."

The video begins by highlighting sacred clothing in various religions, such as the nun's habit, and explains that members of the LDS Church, just like members of other faiths, wear sacred clothing of worship "to connect the believer with the object of their devotion in the most personal way."

The narrator of the video first illustrates the purpose of temple robes, which are worn inside the LDS temples, and then notes that many LDS adults wear temple garments under regular, modest clothing on a daily basis.

"There is nothing magical or mystical about temple garments," the video says. "Church members ask for the same degree of respect and sensitivity that would be afforded to any other faith by people of good will."

The video, which has more than 600,000 views on YouTube, has received a wide reaction across the Internet.

As a non-mormon, I'm glad the church is making these videos in order to improve the understanding of the LDS church.

“It is a good time to be open and honest about issues such as this one,” Dan Litchford, a South Ogden resident, told the Standard Examiner.

"As a non-mormon, I'm glad the church is making these videos in order to improve the understanding of the LDS church," Amanda Supak commented on YouTube.

Many people expressed regret that the video wasn't released earlier.

"It's too bad this video wasn't made years ago, it does a lot to demystify the temple garments," Stephen Reeder said on YouTube. "Let's hope the LDS church becomes more transparent, and explains more of their beliefs. My hats off to the people who made this."
