Brighton, Jordan set records in overtime thriller

SALT LAKE CITY — Wednesday was a historic night for Utah high school football featuring Brighton’ s 78-76 triple-overtime win over Jordan.

Several state records were set during the three-overtime thriller.

— Both teams set a state record for combined total offense with 1,447 yards.

— Jordan’s 76 points is the most points scored in a game in state history by a losing team.

— Jordan quarterback Austin Kafentzis set a new state mark for total offense in a game with 694 yards.

— Kafentzis also matched the state record for touchdowns responsible for with 10.

Most important for Brighton the win secures the second seed in Region 3 which guarantees a home playoff game.

The playoffs begin this week in Class 2A while the rest of the classifications in the state enter the final week of the regular season with region titles and playoff spots up for grabs.

Here are five games to watch that will have a lot of impact on region and playoff races.

5 games to watch this week

No. 5 Sky View vs. No. 3 Roy, Thursday, 7 p.m.:

Fans have a true region championship game in Region 5 as both teams enter the contest with 5-0 records in region play. Roy has an 8-0 record on the season, while Sky View has dropped just one game this season to No. 1 Timpview.

Fremont at Syracuse, Friday, 7 p.m. (Game Night Live Game of the week):

Fremont can win an outright Region 1 championship with a road win against the Titans. A Syracuse win could force a three-way tie with Fremont, Syracuse and Davis unless Davis loses at Weber. In that scenario Syracuse could share the title with Fremont and get the No. 1 seed.

Taylorsville at West, Friday, 7 p.m.:

The winner of this game claims at least a share of the Region 2 championship, and if Granger upsets Hunter then the winner of the Taylorsville-West game claims an outright region title and No. 1 playoff seed.

Corner Canyon at Murray, Friday, 7 p.m.:

Corner Canyon impressed people with its come-from-behind win on the road against Woods Cross. Now it can claim its first outright region title with a win over Murray. The Spartans can not only share the Region 7 title with the upset, but would also claim a No. 1 playoff seed for the first time in a long time.

No. 1 Judge Memorial at No. 4 Morgan, Friday, 7 p.m. (KJZZ):

Judge can repeat as 3A North champions as it tries to defend its state title. Morgan can force a three-way tie atop the region with a win.

Top five performers of the week

Austin Kafentzis, QB, Jordan:

Kafentzis broke Alex Kuresa’s state record for career touchdown passes in Jordan’s 78-76 triple-overtime loss to Brighton. He also set a state record for total offense in a game with 694 yards (498 passing, 196 rushing) and also matched a state record for touchdowns responsible for with 10 (six passing, four rushing).

Joseph Tiatia, RB, Hunter:

Tiatia came up just 10 yards short of matching Kyle Foy’s state record for rushing yards in a game. He had 441 yards on 26 carries and six touchdowns. His touchdown runs of 53, 68, 69, 70, 32 and 47 yards led the Wolverines to a 40-13 win over Hillcrest.

Tucker Camp, QB, Orem:

Camp was 30 of 47 for 509 yards and six touchdowns through the air and added 156 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He had a total of 665 yards of total offense leading Orem to a 59-42 win over Skyline, keeping the Tigers' playoff hopes alive.

Robbie Hutchins and Simi Fehoko, Brighton:

This quarterback/receiver combo came up big in the Bengals record-breaking win over Jordan. Fehoko caught nine of Hutchins 17 completions for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Hutchins had 464 yards of total offense and seven total touchdowns.

Pano Tiatia, RB, Pine View:

The Panthers aren’t just about the pass, they can run the rock too. Tiatia carried the ball 32 times for 283 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-20 win over Payson.
