MW roundup: Spartans get defensive, hand Wyoming first home loss

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Wyoming entered last Saturday’s contest against San Jose State riding the strength of its defense and the inability of quarterback Colby Kirkegaard to make mistakes.

But it was the Spartan defense that rose up and handed the Cowboys their first home loss of the year, 27-20 in overtime.

Joe Gray threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns, and San Jose State held the Cowboys to 277 yards of total offense in an effort that propelled the Spartans to 18th in the nation in total defense.

Hansell Winston and Tyler Winston each hauled in a touchdown pass for San Jose State, and Tyler Ervin ran for 96 yards on 22 carries for the Spartans (3-3, 2-1 MWC).

Shaun Wick ran for 97 yards and a touchdown for Wyoming (3-4, 1-2).

Here’s how the rest of the Mountain West Conference fared in week eight of college football.

Boise State 37, Fresno State 27

At Boise, Jay Ajayi ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries as the Broncos (5-2, 3-1 MWC) sprinted past the Bulldogs in a run-heavy Friday game.

Marteze Waller had 164 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for Fresno State (3-5, 2-2).

Air Force 35, New Mexico 31

At Air Force Academy, Kale Pearson found Jalen Robinette for a 50-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter Saturday for the go-ahead touchdown, and the Falcons (5-2, 2-2 MWC) held on to beat the visiting Lobos.

Pearson completed five passes for 159 yards and the score, and Robinette finished with 96 yards on four receptions. Pearson also ran for a touchdown with 66 yards on 20 carries.

Jhurell Pressley led New Mexico (2-5, 0-3) with 148 yards and two touchdowns on 11 rushes.

Colorado State 16, Utah State 13

At Fort Collins, Colorado, Jared Roberts kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired Saturday to help the Rams (6-1, 2-1 MWC) beat the Aggies in the first sellout at Hughes Stadium since 2004.

Garrett Grayson passed for 243 yards on 20 completions, becoming CSU’s all-time leader in passing yards in school history; the senior found Rashard Higgins 10 times for 187 yards. Running back Dee Hart scored the Rams’ lone touchdown and finished with 60 yards on 20 carries.

Joe Hill led Utah State (4-3, 1-1 MWC) with 64 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Nevada 42, BYU 35

At Provo, Cody Fajardo threw for two touchdowns and ran for two scores, and the Wolf Pack (4-3) rattled off 28-straight points in the second half Saturday to rally by the Cougars.

Christian Stewart threw for 408 yards and four touchdowns to pace BYU (4-3), and Mitch Mathews added 182 yards and two scores for the Cougars, who have lost back-to-back home games for the first time since 2004.

San Diego State 20, Hawaii 10

At San Diego, Donnel Pumphrey ran for 182 yards and a touchdown to help the Aztecs 4-3, 3-1 MW) fend off the Warriors on Saturday night.

Quinn Kaehler threw for 174 yards and a score for San Diego State, which got 42 yards receiving and a touchdown from Lloyd Mills.

Ikalka Woolsey was 17-of-31 passing for 174 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Hawaii (2-5, 1-1).
