FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Utah State lost a grinding, defensive effort, 16-13, at Colorado State Saturday night when Jared Roberts’ 46-yard field goal sailed through the uprights as time expired.

The Aggies (4-3, 1-1 Mountain West) saw their 11-game conference road win streak snapped, a mark that dated back to Utah State’s days as a member of the Western Athletic Conference.

Colorado State (6-1, 2-1) takes virtual control of the Mountain Division race, and becomes eligible for a bowl game for only the second time since 2008.

Here are a few other thoughts on the game, the loss and the season going forward for Utah State, including some potentially bad news for the Aggies.

The Good: ---------

Nick Diaz is on point. After the senior placekicker had some shaky moments at the beginning of the year, he’s converted on 100 percent in back-to-back games in 2014. Diaz drilled field goals of 32 and 25 yards, but Roberts made one more kick than the Aggie starter. Still, scoring seven of Utah State’s 13 points isn’t a bad effort by any college kicker.

Needs Work:

Keepin’ it close. The Aggies needed a win like one that could have came in this game, a grind-it-out defensive effort while converting on only a handful of chances to score. Despite Utah State holding opponents to only 22.1 points per game, the Aggies are 0-2 in games decided by a touchdown or less.

The Aggie defense held Colorado State out of the end zone after the first drive of the game, and the Rams only put up six points in the second half — but it wasn't enough to get the job done.

The Bad:

What’s up with Darell? On a night when Colorado State quarterback Garrett Grayson became his school’s all-time record-holder for passing yards in a career, the focus turned to the loss of another starting quarterback at Utah State. Darell Garretson went down in the second half with a wrist injury, and backup (formerly third-string quarterback) Craig Harrison replaced him for the remainder of the game.

Harrison finished with 5-of-12 passing for 28 yards and avoided any turnovers in a game where he came in cold and got little help from a run game that totaled 100 yards on 19 carries. Garretson, who took over for injured star Chuckie Keeton against Wake Forest, was 14-of-19 passing for 132 yards with an interception.
