HYRUM — The man shot and killed during a family argument Tuesday evening has been identified.
Police received reports of a shooting at 4:20 p.m. at 84 N. 600 East. Utah Highway Patrol deputies responded and found Robert J. Van Hemert, 37, of Hyrum, dead in the home from an apparent gunshot wound.
Aaron Smith, 40, of Provo was outside the home when officers arrived and Smith “identified himself as the individual who had fired the gun inside the home and immediately surrendered himself to the first responding deputies," according to a news release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators determined that an argument about property issues took place inside the home between Smith and his brother-in-law, Van Hemert. During the argument, Van Hemert produced a handgun and Smith responded by also showing a handgun, police said. Shots were fired and Van Hemert was fatally wounded.
Van Hemert rents the property, according to police. His wife and a neighbor were also in the home at the time of the shooting.
Smith was taken into custody and questioned by police. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is still ongoing, police said.
