SALT LAKE CITY — Investigators are asking for help to identify the man who attempted to rob two banks while wearing what appeared to be a fake goatee and wig.

Police created the hashtag #ChinHairBandit after the same man attempted to rob a second bank Wednesday. The first robbery took place at the University Federal Credit Union, located at 3088 S. Richmond Street, at about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department. Investigators said the man demanded money from a teller while holding a weapon.

He was seen traveling north on foot after obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

The second bank robbery attempt occurred at the US Bank located at 2243 E. 2100 South, according to a Tweet posted by the Salt Lake City Police Department just before 5 p.m. Wednesday. In a surveillance image, the man can be seen wearing the same clothing and facial hair as the previous robbery.

People at the bank told police the man was holding a gun in a manila envelope.

"Employees became suspicious of his looks and started asking him many questions," a statement from police reads. "This spooked him and he left before getting any money."

The man should be considered armed and dangerous, according to police.

Investigators said the individual appeared to be a white or Asian male in his late 20s or early 30s. They said it appeared he was wearing a fake goatee and wig, as well as a blue hooded sweatshirt and black ski hat. He is about 5 feet 8 inches tall.

Those with information about the robberies or the identity of the man can call the Salt Lake City Police Department at 801-799-3000 or send a text to 274637 and include “TIPSLCPD” plus relevant information. The case reference is #14-179895.
