SALT LAKE CITY — A 48-inch water main break at approximately 1700 South 2300 East has closed 1700 South at Foothill Drive.

The water was gushing out of the ground and flooding into the street for over an hour but has been shut off.

Public Utilities said residents will not have their water affected now that the main has shut off.

The American Red Cross are on site and report that four families have been displaced so far. They will continue assessing immediate needs throughout the night.

Officials are asking residents in the area to begin storing water because it is unclear when or how long the water will be shut off, according to Jasen Asay from the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

No evacuations have been issued, and officials are asking power companies to check the surrounding power lines and stability of the road.

Salt Lake City Fire Battalion Chief said city engineering is bringing in sandbags to help with flooding.

Emergency responders on scene confirm that some homes have flooded.

Officials are beginning to make damage assessments and no injuries have been reported.

The intersection of 1700 S Foothill Dr. will likely be closed all weekend while the pipe and road are being repaired.

More information will be posted when it becomes available.
