WEST VALLEY CITY — A motorist was shot while driving on state Route 201 in West Valley City Wednesday night.

Investigators shut down the road at 5600 West for three hours after the 10:50 p.m. shooting while they gathered evidence. The highway has since reopened.

Utah Highway Patrol rushed to the scene about three miles east of 5600 West after shots were fired from one car to another.

Sgt. Richard Nielson of UHP said two people were driving east when a white car pulled up on the driver’s side and fired at least one shot into the car, hitting the driver in the shoulder.

The victim stopped the vehicle, got out of the car and began walking around. Witnesses heard the shots and stopped to help the man get himself and his vehicle out of traffic and called police, Nielson said.

The victim was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The passenger was not injured and was cooperating with police.

UHP said the white car sped off and troopers don't know much about who was in that car.

“Right now all we know is it’s a four-door passenger car, that’s all we’ve got,” said Nielson. “We don’t know how many occupants are in it. We don’t have a description of any of the occupants, as well.”

Nielson said investigators don’t believe this was a road rage incident and they are still looking into if they drivers knew each other.

They are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

Updates will be posted as they become available.
