CANYONLANDS — A man died while hiking with his daughter in Canyonlands National Park Monday, police said.
The man, who was in his 70s, fainted as he was hiking back to the Horseshoe Canyon-area parking lot with his daughter, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office said it was notified of the incident at 6:08 p.m. by Canyonlands park rangers.
The daughter had been administering CPR for about an hour when park rangers spoke to the sheriff’s office again at 6:55 p.m., according to investigators. A helicopter was en route at the time and the man was in full cardiac arrest, the sheriff’s office reported.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 7:20 p.m. by medical personnel from the helicopter, according to the sheriff’s office. His body was transported by helicopter to the Wayne County Medical Examiner and transferred to the State Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy.
Officials said the man’s daughter told them he did not have a history of heart problems, but did have some problems with his lungs. She also said her father was taking medication for another health problem.
