WELLINGTON, Carbon County — Cleanup continues in Carbon County Monday night after severe storms caused flooding in homes throughout the county this past weekend.
"Everything we lost is just material. There are memories, but what we gained is the love of the community,” said Robert Branch, community member.
Brian Powell was also hit hard by the storm. There's still 8 inches of water under Powell’s floorboards, and his backyard is a muddy disaster.
"It’ll take us quite awhile to get out of this mess,” Powell said.
Powell estimates the damage to be between $9,000 to $10,000, but he considers himself lucky.
"I know a lot of the others around me, their damage was substantial,” Powell said.
Like many of his neighbors, Branch has no flood insurance. Despite the loss, Branch says he can rebuild. During the past weekend so many people offered to help that Branch said he even had to turn some of them away.
On Monday evening, Branch and his neighbors met at Wellington City Hall in order to figure out what help may be available to them. County Emergency Management official Jason Llewelyn said that getting federal funds is a possibility.
"As we all know, FEMA is the last resort, so we’re trying to exhaust every effort we can prior to making the request,” Llewelyn said.
In the meantime, officials are urging people to prepare for another storm.
