HERRIMAN — People living in the southwest part of the Salt Lake Valley are dealing with a muddy mess.

A powerful thunderstorm rolled in at about 2 p.m., and residents say the rain quickly overwhelmed a retention pond near 6000 West and Heritage Hill Drive. Water, mud and debris spilled over a wall and into the Herriman City Cemetery, they said.

Video and photos from KSL NewsRadio's Paul Nelson show parts of the cemetery covered in 2 1/2 to 3 feet of mud.

Water also flooded a neighborhood south of the cemetery. Chris Christensen's home, on Jeanette Lane, sustained the most damage.

Christensen said he was at work when the flooding started and was alerted to the problem by neighbors. He arrived home to find his basement flooded in 9 feet of water.

"We have 12 stairs from the basement floor to the (main floor), and by the time you reach the third stair down you would actually be submerged in water," he said.

Herriman city officials released a statement on the city's website Monday afternoon cautioning residents to do what they can to lessen future flooding, as more rain is forecast Tuesday.

"These items might include turning down spouts away from basement windows or building a temporary berm with sandbags etc," the statement said.

Residents who do experience flooding problems can contact the city at 801-466-5323.
