WEST VALLEY CITY — A motorcyclist was flown to the hospital after a Sunday night collision with a van.

At 7:42 p.m., a van traveling westbound on 4100 South turned left into an eastbound-traveling motorcyclist, West Valley City police Lt. Lamonte Cox said.

The 22-year-old motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet and sustained critical head injuries in the crash.

In an effort to save time, emergency responders transported the man by helicopter to an area hospital, Cox said.

The accident happened just as it began to rain, but weather was likely not a factor, Cox said. The darkness may have contributed to visibility, though.

"You can't ever stress enough that the helmet protects your head," Cox said. "Even if you're just going down the street, we suggest you always wear your helmet and be safe."
