CACHE VALLEY — One man died as the result of a car accident early Thursday morning, police said.

The accident occurred on SR-91 near SR-61, about 1.5 miles south of the Idaho border, at 6:38 a.m., according to Sgt. Todd Royce of the Utah Highway Patrol. Investigators said a black Jeep was being followed by a silver KIA minivan in the northbound lanes.

Both vehicles were traveling at highway speeds when the Jeep moved in to the left lane to make a turn, according to UHP.

"The driver of the van said took his eyes off the Jeep to look in the mirror and when he looked back the Jeep was braking," a statement from UHP reads. "The van struck the back of the Jeep, causing it to spin around into the slow lane of the southbound lanes and the Jeep was struck again by a black Dodge pick-up truck traveling southbound through the intersection."

The driver of the Jeep, 42-year-old Leigh Purser of Richmond, was killed instantly, according to investigators. They said he wasn't wearing a seatbelt at the time of accident.

The driver of the truck was transported to a hospital in Preston with a leg injury, UHP reported. He was taken by a private vehicle. The driver of the minivan was not injured.

Investigators said the driver of the minivan, who was on his way home from work, "may have been fatigued at the time of the crash."
