MANILA, Daggett County — Police retrieved the body of a man missing since Sept. 1, when his boat is believed to have capsized, from Flaming Gorge Reservoir Saturday.

Charles Darrell Thomas, 69, was discovered by a Department of Public Safety dive team using side scan sonar in the area where the boat likely overturned around 5:40 p.m.

Summit County search and rescue helped deputies pinpoint the location of Thomas’ body using the camera system of a remote operated vehicle on the reservoir’s surface, according to Daggett County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Susie Potter.

Thomas' body was recovered in about 194 feet of water 1 mile from Lucerne Marina and nine-tenths of a mile from Antelope Flats shore at 11:15 p.m., and he was positively identified 30 minutes later, Potter said.

Along with his girlfriend, 62, Thomas was in a small motorized boat Sept. 1 when it capsized between the Antelope Flats area and Lucerne Marina. The woman made it to shore after using a seat cushion as a flotation device, then walked to a campsite to get help.

Daggett County Sheriff Jerry Jorgensen acknowledged the assistance of Wasatch County search and rescue, Uintah County search and rescue and Sweetwater County search and rescue, of Wyoming, in addition to the aforementioned agencies, in locating and recovering Thomas' body.
