OREM — The Utah Valley University men's soccer team scored two second half goals to defeat nationally-ranked Denver 2-1 Friday night in front of a capacity crowd at Clyde Field.
The Wolverines improve to 3-2-0 with the win and remain undefeated at home. No. 21 Denver falls to 4-3-0 with the setback.
"Let's be honest," Utah Valley head coach Greg Maas said. "Denver is a phenomenal team. They are not ranked 21st in the country and number one in the West for no reason. They posed a lot of problems and this was a great victory for our school."
After a first half scoreless draw, Utah Valley's Lucas Cawley got the Wolverines on the scoreboard with a laser shot from 25 yards out that ignited the home crowd. The freshman midfielder set himself up after finding a ball that had deflected off a DU defender and then shooting it past the Pioneer keeper for the score.
"It was a phenomenal goal that got us really motived and got the crowd energized and helped us push through," Maas said. "Our crowd then got behind us and we used that energy. Thankfully, we were very resilient when we had to be in the game."
Denver tied the game in the 71st minute when senior forward Ryan Dodson sent a free kick from the left side of the field into the box where sophomore forward Eric Kronenberg headed the ball into the back of the net.
Utah Valley sophomore midfielder Skyler Milne scored the game winner as he received a sliding pass from teammate Austin Buxton and placed it past a DU defender and the keeper for the score near the left post. Cawley was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Milne led the Wolverines with a game-high four shots on the night, including two on goal.
The Wolverines now head to Las Vegas to compete in the UNLV Nike Invitational. UVU will play UC Riverside on Sept. 26 and UC Irvine on Sept. 28 at the event.
