OREM — Police officers in Orem showed their love to a daughter of one of their own who has been losing her hair.

Two Orem Police Department officers shaved their hair off Wednesday to show support for 9-year-old Kayta Grow, the daughter of officer Tanner Grow. For two years, Kayta’s hair was mysteriously falling out. Doctors now believe mold discovered in the family's historic home is the cause.

Kayta’s situation inspired officer Greer Haymond to take action.

"I thought if she doesn't have any hair, why should I have any hair? So we'd give the public the opportunity to donate some money and shave our heads,” he said.

Thirteen officers volunteered to shave their heads for Kayta, as well as make a $100 donation each to her family for mold cleanup and doctor's bills.

“We did it by seniority of the officers who wanted to do it, and I am second from the top so after $1,200, I will have to be sitting where these guys are,” said Lt. Craig Martinez.

As of Wednesday, $500 had been raised, so three more officers get their turn Thursday. They will buzz their hair, then do a close shave with a razor and shaving cream so their heads feel just like Kayta’s.

"I think they really love and appreciate me and so they are trying to do something nice for me,” the girl said of the officers.

But Kayta says one bald person is enough in her house — she doesn't want her dad to join in. Her mother said what the family really appreciates is the show of brotherhood within the police force.

“A lot of times cops have negative energy directed towards them, but it shows who they really are and that they are willing to take care of those around them and willing to sacrifice personally to help others, and we are just so grateful,” said Leah Grow.
