SANDY — Members of Jordan High School's girls soccer team are learning a tough life lesson after their gear and equipment were stolen from a storage room under the football field bleachers.

Now, disappointment is fueling the team's motivation.

No matter how many games the girls win this year, no matter how many goals they score, they already feel like they can get through anything.

"It's not something that would take the team down, but we are kind of bummed that someone would take our stuff," said Brooklyn Nielsen, one of the team’s captains. "We're like, why would somebody do this?"

It looks like the thieves got into the soccer room through a chain-link fence. On the other side of the fence is the football equipment room. That door was left unlocked, so the thieves went in through the football side, came through the chain-link fence, basically ripped apart a cabinet — tearing open locks — and started stealing equipment likes scarves, uniforms and soccer balls.

"This year is a big deal. We have a lot of seniors, and so we have some goals in mind,” coach Jay Langlois said. “So, the girls just trudged right through it.”

Langlois says the school already replaced the items. But still, he's sorry to know his girls didn't do anything wrong and yet had important items stolen from them.

"It was pretty rough," he said.

When we all found out what happened we were all kind of in a panic, like, 'what are we going to practice with? What are we going to wear for the games,' because they took most of our jerseys.

“Rough” because many of those items were for team fundraising events throughout the year.

"When we all found out what happened we were all kind of in a panic, like, ‘what are we going to practice with? What are we going to wear for the games,’ because they took most of our jerseys," said Lauren Christensen, who is also a captain.

However, the team has done well so far, with a 2-1 record coming into this week. No matter how well they do, though, they want the thief or thieves to know they're not letting this crime stop them.

"I think we came closer together as a team, we're like, ‘you know what? We're going to go through this. Things happen, and we're just going to move on,’" Nielsen said.

They move on one win at a time.

Even though the school has replaced all the team items stolen, the girls have started a GoFundMe fundraiser* to try and pay the school back, as well as raise money for their coaches' personal items the school won't replace.
