SALT LAKE CITY — A man with a history of committing serious crimes was arrested Wednesday shortly after police say he robbed a bank and then left his personal identification behind.
A man wearing a dark, long-haired, "rock star-like" wig and sunglasses walked into U.S. Bank, 1575 S. Main, just before 10 a.m. Wednesday and demanded money from the teller, said Salt Lake police detective Cody Lougy.
After leaving with an undisclosed amount of cash, the man ran behind an alley and took off his disguise. What he didn't realize was he did it right in front of a business surveillance camera, Lougy said. Furthermore, when police arrived, they found the bag the man used to carry the money from the bank. The money was gone, but the man's identification card was still inside, Lougy said.
Joey Lee Archuleta was spotted riding a bicycle on State Street just before noon and police arrested him for investigation of bank robbery.
Court records show Archuleta was convicted last month in 3rd District Court of attempted shoplifting and was sentenced to community service. In 2008, he was convicted of felony drug possession and sentenced to up to five years at the Utah State Prison.
In 2002, Archuleta was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison for being convicted on two counts of sex abuse of a child and tampering with a witness or juror. That conviction came while Archuleta was already serving a prison sentence for a 2001 felony forgery conviction, according to court records. He was also sentenced to up to five years in prison on a felony theft conviction in 2000.
