SALT LAKE CITY — The popular soda released in 1996 and then discontinued in 2001 is back by popular demand and already sold out on its first day, according to the Coca-Cola Co.
Coca-Cola announced Monday that it was bringing back Surge, a Mountain Dew-like, citrus-flavored energy drink. The Facebook group, Surge Movement, has lobbied for the drink’s return since 2011, according to the Los Angeles Times. The group made the announcement of the soda’s return with a YouTube video and the hashtag #SURGEisback.
Surge will only be sold on Amazon.com, available in 12 packs of 16-ounce cans. However, the product was already sold out within a few hours Monday morning. Along with exclusively being sold online, Surge will only be marketed through social media, since Coca-Cola said it will not invest any traditional marketing for the soda, according to Time magazine.
The soda has 230 calories and 56 grams of sugar in one 16-ounce can.
