PROVO — Provo City is the new Guinness World Record holder for the largest scavenger hunt after their successful event Saturday.

Provo City joined with Google Fiber,Cotopaxi and Downtown Provo to create the “Passport to Provo” scavenger hunt. The event was held Saturday and a judge from Guinness World Records was on site to announce that Provo won the new record with its 2,079 participants.

The previous world record was set by the University of Chicago in 2011 with 924 participants. Provo Mayor John Curtis said he hadn’t been sure if they would break the record, but that the event was a culmination of “perfect” settings.

“It was a perfect day, perfect weather, fun activity, ” Curtis said. “(There was) lots of promotion. It all came together in such a nice way, including the weather (which) cooperated to make it the perfect day.”

The scavenger hunt was held from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. within a 1.5 square-mile radius and led participants through the streets and businesses in the downtown area. Tasks included things like taking a picture with a llama, tasting a new soda at Sodalicious, flying a kite at North Park and signing up to volunteer at United Way.

Teams who completed the most tasks and who finished the tasks in the fastest time were awarded gift baskets containing items from downtown businesses.

The Google Fiber Provo head of sales and marketing director Devin Baer helped spearhead the scavenger hunt and said he was pleased with the turnout.

“It just worked on so many levels,” Baer said. “It didn’t just give people the opportunity to explore the revitalization of downtown Provo. It also did a lot of good. We are going to have hundreds of volunteers at upcoming events and hopefully we clean up downtown Provo during some of those tasks. And I think people had a blast doing it.”
