SALT LAKE CITY — A man remained hospitalized in critical condition Sunday after being shot in the stomach late Saturday night.

About 11:30 p.m., Dallas Waddoups, 18, went to a home near 600 North and 300 West and said he was looking for a friend. "When the people inside the apartment didn't know what he was talking about, (Waddoups) became upset," said Salt Lake Police Lt. Mike Ross.

A few men came out of the home, asked Waddoups to leave, and escorted him to the sidewalk.

"(Waddoups) became more upset, pulled a firearm out of his pants and fired a round, striking the victim in the stomach," Ross said.

The victim, a 20-year-old man, was taken to University Hospital in critical condition. Ross, however, said it appears he will recover.

Waddoups left the scene in a car.

"Luckily one of the witnesses got a good (license) plate and a good description, and with the help of West Valley (police), we located the shooter in their city," Ross said.

Officers arrested Waddoups about 2 a.m. Sunday. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault and witness tampering.

Ross said police are still investigating, but believe that drugs may have been involved in the incident.
