HUNTSVILLE, Weber County — A test of sonar equipment at Pineview Reservoir resulted in the recovery of four submerged vehicles Saturday, some of which may have been in the water since the 1990s.

No bodies were found and it is not believed any of the cars were occupied when they went into the water, the Weber County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Members of the sheriff's search and rescue team and marine patrol deputies located five vehicles near Pineview Dam during the test. Four of the vehicles were fished out of the water but removal of the fifth car, which is closer to the dam, was delayed because it was too difficult to recover. Recovery of that car will likely resume next weekend, the sheriff's office said.

One of the recovered vehicles, a Toyota 4Runner, was reported stolen from Ogden on Aug. 30. The other vehicles, a Dodge Raider, a Suzuki Samurai and a Ford pickup truck, had license plates that had expired in the 1990s.

According to the sheriff's office, the vehicles were apparently dumped off an embankment at the pullout on the south side of the reservoir. The vehicles were found about 30 to 50 feet from shore in 30 to 40 feet of water.

Search and rescue team divers assisted a towing crew in hooking the vehicles so they could be hoisted from the water.

Investigators are still trying to determine how and when the vehicles ended up in the reservoir and whether any of the others were reported stolen.
