SALT LAKE CITY — A terminally-ill Utah man is putting the needs of his cat before himself.

“Before he goes to the ‘rainbow bridge,’ he knows that ‘Nefertiti is safe and sound, and happy, and is in a good family,” Humane Society of Utah Spokesman Carl Arky said.

The man, who is too sick for an interview, gave up his 13-year-old long-haired tabby for adoption. “Nefertiti” was his lone companion.

Arky says the cat is a little nervous at the Humane Society, but, “she seems like a cat who will adjust very well wherever she goes, with whomever she goes.”

“They’re going to be getting a great cat,” he said. “But more importantly, they’re also going to be doing a tremendous deed giving this guardian of ‘Nefertiti’ some comfort as well, as he enters the final stage of his life.”

Arky adds the man couldn’t stand the thought of abandoning his beloved cat through death, possibly leaving it days without food or water.

“Nefertiti” is waiting for adoption at the Humane Society of Utah at 4242 S. 300 West in Murray. She’s an inside cat who has been spayed and declawed.
