SNOWBASIN — A 28-year-old Clearfield woman died Monday while riding a motorcycle near Snowbasin when she lost control of the machine.
The woman had been riding north with a group of other motorcyclists on Trapper's Loop Road between Morgan and Weber counties when she fell behind the other riders, Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Lane Findlay said. Witnesses reported she was traveling at a high rate of speed as she attempted to catch up to the others.
"She lost control on the corner and crashed," Findlay said.
The accident, which occurred just on the Weber County side of the route, was witnessed by several vehicles, one of which contained a physician who tried to help. The woman was wearing a helmet and riding jacket, but sustained extensive injuries.
A medical helicopter responded, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
"She was wearing a helmet and taking some precautions, but obviously it's a mountainous road, a lot of winding curves and inclines, and according to witnesses she was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed, which would be dangerous for that roadway," Findlay said.
The road was closed to one lane in each direction as the crash was investigated. Findlay said it is believed speed was a factor.
The woman's name has not been released pending notification of family.
