SALT LAKE COUNTY — A 14-year-old is in custody after three minors were involved in a rollover accident then fled the scene early Sunday morning.

Around 4 a.m., police received a report that there was a rollover accident near 10200 S. 8400 West in Copperton, said Det. Ken Hansen with the Unified Police Department. Three minors were seen running away from the scene just outside of Copperton, he said.

Police arrived at the scene of the accident and determined that the passengers might have major injuries, Hansen said. A short time later, the three juveniles were located near the South Jordan Police Department. Three males, ages 14, 12 and 11, were taken to a nearby hospital and treated.

Police are not sure who was driving the car when it rolled over, but it is "probable" it was the 14-year-old boy because of the ages involved, Hansen said.

"I'm pretty confident that they didn't have permission to use the car," Hansen said. "It's obvious that these individuals didn't have a lot of experience driving and lost control of the vehicle."

The 14-year-old was booked into the Salt Lake County Detention Center, Hansen said, and police are in the process of contacting his parents or guardians. The other two boys were released to their parents.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
