PROVO — Provo City announced their plans to attempt to break the world record for the largest scavenger hunt.

Provo City joined with Google Fiber and Downtown Provo for the event to celebrate Provo’s accomplishments and to raise awareness for Google Fiber’s sign-up deadline on Sept. 20, according to ProvoMayor.com. The “Passport to Provo” scavenger hunt is planned for Sept. 13 and is a free community event designed to highlight local businesses and landmarks.

The current world record was set by the University of Chicago in 2011, and Provo will need at least 925 attendees to break the record, according to ProvoMayor.com. A judge from the Guinness World Records will be on site to see if the record is broken.

Teams of two to eight people will go on a scavenger hunt around Provo and complete a series of tasks. Tasks may include taking a picture with a Provo landmark or sampling a product at a local restaurant. To join in the scavenger hunt, teams must be at the Utah Valley Convention Center at 1 p.m. for the start and must return no later than 6 p.m.

Teams can register for the event online and can check-in early on Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Bullock Room in the Provo Library to get their task list. People can also register the day of the event from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at level three of the Utah Valley Convention Center.

The winners of the scavenger hunt will be announced and local bands will perform from 7 to 11 p.m. after the hunt. Teams will also receive #ProvoRocks shirts and Provo Google Fiber shirts.
