SALT LAKE CITY — Last weekend’s earthquake in Napa, California is sparking a familiar conversation about earthquake insurance.
The percentage of homeowners with earthquake insurance in California and across the U.S. has declined despite rising estimates of the risk of an earthquake. Here in Utah it's no different.
Standard or regular homeowners insurance in Utah does not cover damage from an earthquake. Quake coverage is an added cost on a policy that must be requested.
Utah's Insurance Commission is encouraging Utahns to talk to their agent about earthquake coverage. There is a 10- to 30-day waiting period before coverage kicks in.
Vehicle recall website
About 46 million cars have been recalled in the U.S. this year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching a new online tool for car owners.
Safercar.gov now lets you look up your car or truck's status by entering the vehicle identification number.
The odds are good that the news will be bad. According to the LA Times, about 20 percent of all cars on the road are subject to a recall. This year's figure, inflated by many recalls from GM, trumps the old record of 30.8 million vehicle recalls in 2004.
Airline fares cut
This week marks the end of the summer airfare season, which means fewer vacation travelers and more available airline seats.
To fill those seats this week, airlines are cutting fares substantially.
Depending on your destination and carrier, some airlines have cut ticket prices as much as 30 percent.
Travel experts suggest you be flexible with travel dates and times, and always try to travel on Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday. As usual, try to avoid Friday and Sunday.
