SALT LAKE CITY — The Los Angeles Angels and Miami Marlins battled across their respective organizations Monday.

The major league squads played each other in Anaheim, California, with the Angels, owners of the best record in baseball, facing off against a Marlins squad that is battling for a wild card spot in the National League. Also of note, former Salt Lake Bees pitcher Wade LeBlanc started for Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, the teams' Triple-A squads, the New Orleans Zephyrs and Salt Lake, aren’t headed toward the playoffs, but both are still focused on the development of players for their prospective big league clubs.

New Orleans showcased its offense in the opener of the final series at Smith’s Ballpark this season, battering Bees starter Caleb Clay on the way to beating Salt Lake 6-5.

Salt Lake starter Caleb Clay (3-6) allowed six runs over 6.2 innings to take his fifth straight loss.

The Zephyrs’ offensive output started early, when both Justin Bour and Kyle Jensen both doubled as New Orleans scored three runs in the second inning. Bour doubled again in the third inning, scoring two more runs as the Zephyrs took a 5-0 lead.

Salt Lake scored in the bottom of the fifth inning as second baseman Vance Albitz scored on a single from shortstop Shawn O’Malley to briefly cut the deficit to 5-1. However, New Orleans countered with another run in the top of the seventh.

The Bees made one more run in the seventh inning as an Albitz double scored catcher John Buck, who opened the inning with a double himself. Then, Albitz scored on a fielding error to cut the score to 6-3. Shawn O’Malley scored later in the inning on a double from designated hitter Grant Green, bringing the Bees within two runs.

Salt Lake scored an additional run in the eighth as 2014 All-PCL outfielder Brennan Boesch scored on a single from pinch-hitter J.B. Shuck.

Zephyrs pitcher Alex Sanabia earned the win for New Orleans, throwing six and two-third innings while surrendering two earned runs. Clay took the loss for Salt Lake, surrendering six runs in six and two-thirds innings.

The Bees and Zephyrs play the second game of a three-game series Tuesday, with Salt Lake right-hander Chris Volstad facing off against New Orleans right-hander Elih Villanueva.
