LAYTON — East High School is used to being a dominant power in high school football.
And as the 2014 season got underway on Friday, the Leopards proved they will once again be a top power in the state, as East propelled past Northridge in a rainy contest, 24-15, in Layton.
The Leopards led 6-0 after the first quarter as East’s Sione Mafua scored on a 10-yard run. Mafua also scored a touchdown in the second quarter, taking a 23-yard run to the end zone. Because of the conditions, both kicks failed, but the Leopards took a 12-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

However, Northridge scored its first points of the season as Dayan Lake returned a punt to cut the deficit to 12-6. East’s Helaman Suesue scored on an 11-yard run, as the Leopards took an 18-7 lead at halftime.
The Knights would further cut into the deficit as Ben Jackson scored on a three-yard run. Then a Lake pass for the two-point conversion brought Northridge within three, 18-15. But East’s Lorenzo Manu scored on a 30-yard run to put the game out of reach.
The Leopards host Jordan next Friday, while Northridge faces off against Olympus.
