SALT LAKE CITY — A leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is encouraging members to get more involved in social media.

Elder David A. Bednar of the church's Quorum of the Twelve outlined the potential the church sees in individual use of social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

It was a call for LDS members to make their voices heard on social media, with an emphasis on sharing goodness.

Using examples of how the LDS Church has been successful in sharing messages through social media, Bednar said now is the time for church members to do the same.

"Messages that are authentic, edifying and praiseworthy — literally to sweep the earth as with a flood," he said.

Bednar outlined the pitfalls and potential social media have in helping LDS members share their beliefs with others.

"Following these simple guidelines will enable members of the church around the world to create and share gospel messages that will allow the light to shine forth out of darkness," he said.

And a new feature film produced by the church — "Meet the Mormons" highlighting six Mormons from around the world — will arrive in movie theaters around the country in October and eventually be available on the Internet.

Bednar said the film is designed to help others better understand who Latter-day Saints are.

"‘Meet the Mormons' addresses common misconceptions about our beliefs and highlights the blessings that come from living the gospel," Bednar said.
