SALT LAKE CITY — Local football star Scott Mitchell will be competing on the upcoming season of “The Biggest Loser,” NBC announced Wednesday.

Mitchell played quarterback for the University of Utah before spending 12 seasons in the NFL on teams like the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens. He later returned to Springville High School, his alma mater, and coached the football team there for four years.

He will appear on the 16th season of “The Biggest Loser,” which will air on NBC starting Sept. 11 and feature 20 former athletes. The theme of the season is “Glory Days.”

Mitchell, 46, started to struggle with his weight when he was 35 years old because of a busy lifestyle and poor diet, according to his profile on the show’s website. He weighed 366 pounds when filming began for the competition.

“His biggest motivation for going on the show was seeing his dad die of obesity-related causes early this year and knowing he could be headed down the same path if he doesn't change his life,” the profile reads.

Mitchell struggles with sleep apnea and high blood pressure as a result of his weight, according to the profile.

He currently lives in Mapleton and has five kids between the ages of 11 and 21.
