SALT LAKE CITY — Baseball is a journeyman’s game.

Players will play in a variety of stadiums, in a variety of cities, with a variety of teams, in a variety of professional levels. Just ask newly acquired Salt Lake Bees pitcher Randy Wolf, who made his first start for the Bees against the Tacoma Rainiers Tuesday.

On May 4, Wolf surrendered four runs but beat Salt Lake in 5.2 innings. After leaving Reno, he worked as a relief pitcher for the Miami Marlins, earning four saves until he was released. Wolf then pitched for Norfolk, Baltimore’s Triple-A affiliate, until being signed by the Bees on July 26.

While Wolf earned a win in his last Pacific Coast League start against the Rainiers, he did not fare as well for Salt Lake, surrendering two runs in 3.2 innings against Tacoma. Still, the Bees found a way to beat the Rainiers 5-3 at Smith’s Ballpark.

Salt Lake scored the first run of the game on a Tommy Field solo home run to left field. However, Tacoma countered in the fourth, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead. First, Justin Smoak hit a solo home run to right field, and then Jesus Montero scored on a Julio Morban single.

Tommy Field had his third multi-homer game as a pro Tuesday against Tacoma.

The Bees answered the bell in the bottom half of the inning as Field hit a two-run shot for his second home run of the game, tying the game at 3-3. Then, after Tacoma scored a run in the top of the fifth, the Bees took a 4-3 lead on a Brennan Boesch solo home run to right field.

Shawn O’Malley hit a solo home run for Salt Lake in the seventh.

Bees manager Keith Johnson said Field showcased his hitting ability Tuesday.

“On any given night if you barrel a ball up and hit it pretty good, it has a chance to go out," he said. "(Field) is more a doubles type of guy. If he just misses one a little bit more, it's a homer. He did a good job of doing that twice."

Salt Lake reliever Anthony Lerew earned the win for the Bees, pitching three innings while surrendering one run. Tacoma starter Taijuan Walker took the loss.

Wolf was the 19th different starter for Salt Lake this season, and the 39th different pitcher.

The Bees and Rainiers play the second game of the season Wednesday, with Salt Lake right-hander Caleb Clay scheduled to face Tacoma right-hander Jordan Pries.

Note: Thursday’s series finale against Tacoma is scheduled to start at 8:05 p.m. and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network. Television star Ty Burrell is scheduled to throw the first pitch for the game.
