WOODS CROSS — Fire crews contained a fire in Woods Cross that destroyed a building in Woods Cross.

The fire occurred at a building approximately 75 feet away from residential homes, Utah Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, said. Weiler lives in the area and said he saw the fire on his way home from work just before 5:00 p.m.

"It's an extremely large amount of billowing smoke," Weiler said. "It's actually right behind some residential houses. The houses are not on fire yet, but it's literally right in their backyard."

The fire gutted the building where Overhead Door and another business are located.

For one family, the fire was a little too close for comfort.

"It was a really big shocker to come up and just find that this humongous fire was right in your back yard," Toua Strong, a nearby homeowner said.

"I was inside and could feel the heat. It was coming right through the house."

The heat was so intense it buckled the siding of Strong's house.

"This is a significant loss," said Jeff Bassett, South Davis Metro fire chief. "It's a large building. It will take our investigators quite some time to go through and process it."

The fire contained more hazards than usual for the 50 firefighters at the scene. Oxygen and acetylene containers tend to explode in fires, according to Bassett.

Bassett said there were multiple explosions, though none of them started the fire.

"We just had a large amount of fire," Bassett said. "Went through the roof very quickly. So we'll be looking into those activities to see what employees were doing at that time."

One firefighter got a bad cut while responding to the fire, but he has since been treated and released.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
