WAUKESHA, Wisconsin — The 12-year-old girl stabbed 19 times by two classmates in June has received hundreds of well-wishing letters, and she recently received a Purple Heart medal from an anonymous donor.

The victim (whose identity has not been revealed due to her age) was stabbed multiple times by two 12-year-old girls during a sleepover, according to the Associated Press. The girls later told prosecutors that they had tried to kill her in an attempt to win favor with the fictional, spooky Internet character, “The Slenderman.”

The girls had left the victim in the wooded area where they stabbed her, and she was later discovered by a passing cyclist, the Associated Press reported. The 12-year-old was rushed into surgery and has been making a recovery at home.

“The little girl and her brother open up the hundreds and some days thousands of packages sent to the family from generous people from all over the world,” Stephen Lyons, the survivor’s spokesperson, told ABC News. “It's therapeutic and something she and her brother do every day.”

Many of the letters contained paper purple hearts, but the family received a surprise when the girl received a Purple Heart medal, according to The Chicago Tribune. A note with the medal read, “The only heart I could find. Be strong.” Purple Heart medals are typically awarded to soldiers wounded or killed in battle.

The alleged attackers, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, will face up to 60 years in prison if convicted as adults of attempted homicide, The Chicago Tribune reported.
