RICKS SPRING, LOGAN CANYON — Seat belts likely made the difference in a head-on collision in Logan Canyon.

Just after 3 p.m. on Sunday, a 2013 Honda Civic was headed southbound down Logan Canyon near Ricks Spring, according to Lt. Lee Perry of the Utah Highway Patrol. The Civic was passing other vehicles in the northbound passing lane when it hit a pickup truck head-on coming around a curve.

The driver of the Civic, along with the 19-year-old driver of the pickup truck and his 18-year-old female passenger were taken to the hospital by ground transportation.

A 24-year-old male passenger in the Civic had to be extricated and taken by Life Flight to the hospital. None of the individuals have been identified.

Perry estimated both vehicles were going between 45 to 55 mph, which was close to the speed limit in the area.

“Lucky for us, everybody was wearing seat belts today,” Perry said. “Head-on collisions can be very very catastrophic.”

Perry stressed the importance of wearing seat belts and how they make a significant impact in saving lives.

“The difference between life and death for these people could have been seat belts,” Perry said. “The fact that they had seat belts is a big deal and we’re glad people are taking the heed to wear seat belts so we don’t have more serious injuries in these types of crashes.”
