LEEDS, Washington County — Washington County sheriff's detectives continued Friday to investigate the shooting death of a Leeds man and were trying to determine whether it was done in self-defense.

Deputies were called to a residence about 8:20 p.m. Thursday on a report of shots fired.

According to witnesses, Stephen Aizenberg, 70, of Leeds, walked from his house to his neighbor's house armed with a handgun. He walked down his neighbor's driveway while pointing his gun at the residents who had called 911, the sheriff's office said in a prepared statement.

A man and several women were visiting the neighbor and did not know Aizenberg or why he was approaching them with a gun aimed at them, according to police.

When Aizenberg continued to walk toward them with his gun still pointed at the group, the visiting man shot him, according to the sheriff's office.

"Detectives have been unable to determine why Mr. Aizenberg confronted his neighbor's visitors while armed. There is no evidence of any prior confrontations or conflicts between Mr. Aizenberg, his neighbors, or their visitors," the sheriff's office stated.

The alleged shooter remained on scene and was reportedly cooperating with investigators. He was not arrested and was scheduled to be interviewed a second time on Friday.

Chief Deputy Shauna Jones said detectives were still trying to establish a motive Friday for the shooting, explaining that the "circumstances are unusual."

Additional information will be posted as it becomes available. Video Contributor: Shara Park
