SALT LAKE CITY — A man and woman were arrested Tuesday evening after attempting to pass a forged check and riding on a stolen motorcycle, police said.
Detective Greg Wilking said the arrest occurred around 5:30 p.m. at the Zions Bank at 910 W. 2100 South. A man rode up to the drive-through window on a motorcycle with a woman riding behind him. The couple handed a fraudulent check to the clerk and attempted to cash it, Wilking said.
The bank had already had several previous fraud cases with the business involved, so the clerk contacted the business in connection with the check and called the police, Wilking said. The owner of the business verified the check was fraudulent.
Officers arrived on scene and, upon further investigation, discovered the motorcycle was stolen and had stolen plates from another motorcycle. Police also found several IDs and other documents belonging to other people.
Police arrested 39-year-old Kimmerlee Rae Johnston and 21-year-old Michael Lee Viphongsay and both were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. Johnston was arrested on suspicion of forgery and Viphongsay was arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle.
