UTAH COUNTY — A car accident on I-15 in Payson Saturday critically injured two women and forced the closure of the freeway. A second crash near Point of the Mountain also closed southbound I-15, leading to heavy traffic delays in Utah County.

The first accident occured around 3:15 p.m. on southbound I-15 near mile marker 247. The rollover accident critically injured the 55-year-old female driver and another 60-year-old woman, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Mary Kaye Lucas. There were also five children in the car, but none was seriously injured, she said.

The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for about an hour to allow a medical helicopter could land, Lucas said. The 60-year-old woman was taken to the hospital in the helicopter, and the 55-year-old woman was transported by ambulance, she said.

The second accident happened at mile marker 284 just before 5 p.m., according to a tweet from the Utah Department of Transportation. Details on this accident were not immediately available, but it did force the closure of southbound lanes near Point of the Mountain for about 10 minutes.

As of 5:45 p.m., all southbound lanes had been reopened but traffic was still heavily backed up in the area.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
