PROVO — It’s safe to say most people don’t want kids to deal with bullying, including Jimmer Fredette.

“In today’s world, it’s a huge issue in schools. And people don’t realize how big of an issue it is,” Fredette said.

That’s why Fredette and the Fredette Family Foundation hosted a 3-on-3 basketball tournament called Jimmer Jam Camp to help share an anti-bullying message with his fans that can be applied both on and off the court.

“I want (kids) to be inclusive with all the kids around them,” Fredette said.

Participants loved competing in the tournament, but they also learned the importance of respecting others.

“People can make fun of people in basketball and at life, so if you don’t bully (on the court), you don’t bully in other places,” said tournament participant Kyle Sorensen. “I think it’s good because bullying is bad. I don’t like bullying.”

It's just about drilling into these kids' heads that it's important to have these types of standards.

Fredette said even if just one person does something to stop bully, their example can reach many other children.

“Hopefully we can get a few, and then it can be a snowball effect where one kid helps another,” he said. “Then it’s like, ‘Hey, that was pretty cool, maybe I’ll help someone now.’ ”

The participants also signed a contract, agreeing to be respectful and treat others with kindness. During the next school year, the Fredette Family Foundation will continue to spread its anti-bullying message to 10 different schools in Provo.

“It’s just about drilling into these kids’ heads that it’s important to have these types of standards,” Fredette said.
